Colorado Access Distributes Funds to Support Communities Most Impacted by COVID-19

DENVER – Colorado Access announced the third installment in their release of funds to support providers and the community through COVID-19 relief efforts in the state. With the pandemic disproportionately affecting communities of color, the goal is to support those providers serving the communities hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our plan all along has been to reassess and be strategic about how we’re supporting our communities,” said Marty Janssen, senior director of RAE communications and programs at Colorado Access. “Our third payment in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic was designed to take a deeper look into how providers are caring for these especially vulnerable populations. Our mission is to see healthy communities transformed by the care that people want at a cost we can all afford. When communities are disproportionately affected by this pandemic, we felt it was within our realm as a community partner to do what we could to help.”

Funds were allocated to various provider partners and community organizations throughout the Denver metropolitan area in a unique way to determine and support providers who serve communities disproportionately affected by COVID-19. A hotspotting technique was used to identify those provider partners located in areas with higher COVID-19 rates. Claims data were used to further identify providers who are more highly engaged with patients.

“Now that COVID-19 has existed here in Colorado for more than six months, we’re really able to take a look at the data and see how providers and our communities are affected,” said Aaron Brotherson, director of provider affairs at Colorado Access. “Our initial step was to get money out the door to support the provider community at large. From there we really wanted to make sure we were supporting those providers who were hardest hit and continuing to serve our members in high COVID-19 areas.”

This is the third round of funding Colorado Access has implemented since the COVID-19 pandemic began. The first two rounds consisted of funding sent to all providers contracted with Colorado Access.
