I am so lucky to have two beautiful and sweet dogs. I live in a townhome without a yard, so dog walking is a daily job. We go on at least two walks, sometimes three, depending on the weather. My old man dog Roscoe has only three legs but he loves his walks. It is good for all of us to get outside and get some exercise. Walking your dog builds and strengthens the bond that you have with them. I am able to see how Roscoe is moving, watch for any signs of pain or stiffness that comes with being an older tripod. Dogs love to be outside, sniffing gross things and rolling in the grass. Walking is great dog exercise and can prevent naughty behaviors. There are benefits for us humans as well. We get to get outside and get moving, which can help with our health, including weight loss and lower blood pressure. Walking your dog for just 30 minutes a day can lower cortisol (stress hormone) levels. Who couldn’t use a little stress relief? Walking my dog through my neighborhood has helped me deal with feelings of loneliness, especially during COVID-19 lockdowns. I have found a community of other dog owners and people who just like to pet dogs. Walking my dogs has improved my overall sense of well-being and keeps me healthy emotionally and physically. Let’s leash up our best friends and go for a long walk; please remember to bring poop bags.
