Colorado Access Supports Local Communities Through Food Initiatives

AURORA, Colo. – November 18, 2025 – In a dedicated effort to alleviate food insecurity in the region when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were delayed earlier this month, Colorado Access partnered with food programs and initiatives, including more than 10 food banks and organizations across Adams, Arapahoe, Denver and Douglas counties in Colorado.

This work injects nearly $200,000 into the community through local food resources, reflecting the organization’s longstanding commitment to enhancing community health and well-being, as well as recognizing that food security is a key component to both physical and behavioral health. Many Medicaid members rely on SNAP benefits, highlighting the importance of these initiatives. As a Medicaid health plan, this builds on Colorado Access’ support for Propositions LL and MM, food-related initiatives that passed in the recent election.

“Local food banks and pantries are the first point of contact for many and play a vital role in getting food directly to families and individuals in our communities,” said Leah Pryor-Lease, director of community and external relations at Colorado Access. “This support aims to bolster their efforts and ensure that everyone facing food insecurity has access to nutritious food.”

Recipient organizations include Aurora Interfaith Community Food Bank, Benefits in Action, Integrated Family Community Food Bank, Jewish Family Service Food Bank, Metro Caring, Secor Cares, Struggle of Love, SW Food Coalition, Village Exchange Center, and WeeCycle.

Each organization was selected for its commitment to delivering essential food resources to individuals and families in need. From providing mobile food assistance to comprehensive food pantry services, these partnerships strengthen the fabric of Colorado communities.

Collectively, this investment addresses the complex factors that influence total health and advances the goal of Colorado Access to reduce barriers to care and reflect the ongoing commitment to support community-led solutions that create meaningful, measurable change.

These food donations arrive at a critical time for food security organizations, building on longer-term investments made to support their work through the Community Giving Program. Colorado Access supported the monthly food pantry and fresh food pop-ups at The Fax Partnership with an investment in July 2024.

“Partnerships like the one we have with Colorado Access make it possible for us to continue serving our community with dignity and compassion,” said Monica Martinez, executive director at The Fax Partnership. “With their support, we were able to bring fresh produce directly to families, connecting them to the resources they need to thrive.”

Colorado Access also supported two ballot measures that passed in the recent election, Proposition LL and Proposition MM. These measures primarily focus on funding free meals for all public school students in the state. Any excess funds will be allocated toward SNAP administration in Colorado.

“Our support of Propositions LL and MM reflects our commitment to increasing food access within our membership and our greater Colorado communities,” said Stephanie Glover, director of policy, advocacy and research at Colorado Access. “Children shouldn’t have to worry about the cost of lunch, or skip a meal because their family can’t afford meals. Colorado Access is proud to support children’s health and well-being through Healthy School Meals for All.”

In its 30-year history, Colorado Access has supported a variety of organizations, adjusting its strategy and focus to meet community needs at the time. This current work builds upon ongoing efforts aimed at combating food insecurity. Those facing food insecurity or in need of food resources should call 211 for support. With combined support and action, Colorado can provide a healthier and more secure future for all.
