Health Care Can Be Confusing — Here’s How to Make It Easier

I’ll be the first to admit, health insurance can be confusing. I’ve been there, trying to figure out what’s covered, who I can see, and how to avoid surprise bills. The good news? Once you know a few basics, it can get a lot easier. Here’s what I’ve learned that might help you:
What Does “In-Network” Mean?
Not all doctors and clinics work with all insurance plans. Providers who “accept” your insurance are called in-network. They’ve agreed to work with your health plan, so your visits usually cost less.
If you go to a doctor who is out-of-network, you might have to pay the full cost of your visit. That can be expensive, so it’s best to stay in-network if you can.
Quick tips:
- Always double-check before an appointment. Ask, “Do you take my insurance?”
- If you are a Colorado Access member, use our Find a Provider tool to search for doctors who are in-network.
Where Should You Go for Care?
It’s not always easy to know where to go when you’re sick or hurt. Choosing the right place can save you time, stress, and money. Here’s a breakdown:
- Doctor’s office or primary care provider (PCP): Best for check-ups, prescriptions, or general health questions.
- Urgent care: For health problems that need quick attention but aren’t life-threatening. For example, minor injuries, flu symptoms, or infections.
- Emergency room (ER): For serious emergencies only, like chest pain, trouble breathing, or major injuries. The ER is expensive, so save it for true emergencies.
- Telehealth: Many doctors offer care by phone or video. It’s a great option for follow-up visits, mental health care, or when it’s hard to get to a clinic. Ask your doctor if they offer telehealth.
- Nurse advice line: If you have Health First Colorado (Colorado’s Medicaid program), you can call the Nurse Advice Line anytime at 800-283-3221 for free health advice.
- Mental health assistance: Need someone to talk to? You can call or text 988, a free, confidential support line, available 24/7.
