National Work From Home for Wellness Day

A quaint work from home setup with a laptop, notebook, cell phone, and earphones.

Our culture today thrives on hustle, side gigs, productivity goals, and an emphasis on achievement. While there’s nothing wrong with ambition and drive, we also need to make space for rest, renewal, and self-care. In recent years, many of us have transitioned to working remotely, whether by choice or necessity. And while that shift has brought many benefits, it also calls for a new kind of intentionality.

On the personal level, working from home gives us:

  • More flexibility in our schedules
  • Elimination or reduction of commute time
  • Improved work-life balance
  • Cost savings on fuel, meals, and other daily expenses
  • A chance to reclaim time for ourselves and our families

On the global level, working from home gives us:

  • Fewer commutes, which lowers carbon emissions and reduces traffic congestion
  • More inclusive hiring, as location is no longer a barrier
  • Lower overhead for companies
  • The ability for people to live and work outside of major urban centers

But this shift hasn’t come without challenges. One of the biggest? The fading boundary between work life and home life. When your office is just a few feet away, it’s easy to check “just one more email” or squeeze in a quick task — even if it’s after hours. Without physical separation, stress from the workday can spill into your home environment, especially if your workspace is sitting in the middle of where you unwind.

Some tips and tricks for work from home wellness:

  • Create a dedicated workspace, no matter how small, so you can truly “leave work” when you log off
  • Add a personal touch — music, plants, or cozy lighting that makes your workspace feel your own
  • Begin each day with a routine that helps you ease into work (coffee, movement, reading—your call!)
  • Schedule short screen-free breaks for movement, breathwork, or simply resting your eyes from all that blue light!
  • Take lunch breaks deliberately, away from the screen (I am currently listening to all the Harry Potter audiobooks whilst I eat lunch )
  • Make time for connection — catch up with a colleague just to chat, like a virtual coffee break
  • End your day with a brain dump — write down lingering thoughts or tomorrow’s to-dos so you can mentally unplug for the rest of the evening

There’s a lot happening in the world, and now more than ever, it’s important to be deliberate about protecting our mental health, engaging in practices that support wellness, and building a work-life rhythm that suits our individual styles.
